Genuine leather has a very distinctive essence: that natural, warm and slightly earthy scent that many of us associate with quality, craftsmanship and elegance. But like any fine material, it also requires certain care to preserve its properties over time.

And yes, the scent is also part of its charm. Here are a few simple tips to help your leather bag retain its original aroma:

1. Store your leather bag properly

Store your leather bag in a dry, well-ventilated place, away from sources of heat or moisture. Avoid keeping it in closed boxes for long periods — leather needs to breathe.

Ideally, use the fabric dust bag we include with every bag and place it somewhere with good air circulation.

2. No perfumes or air fresheners

Although it may seem like a good idea, applying scented essences or sprays directly onto leather will only mask — and often damage — its natural scent.

In addition, some products contain alcohols that can damage the finish. We recommend this article with tips to prevent your leather bag from colour transfer, where you’ll find advice to keep your favourite bag in the best condition.

3. Take care of the interior as well

The inside of the bag is often overlooked, yet it can affect its overall scent. Empty it from time to time, give it a shake and, if necessary, wipe it with a dry cloth.

You can place a small cotton pouch with dried lavender or bicarbonate of soda inside (always contained, never loose) to absorb odours without interfering with the leather’s natural aroma.

4. Avoid carrying items that transfer odours

The inside of the bag also matters. Even if it looks flawless on the outside, filling it with items that give off strong or unpleasant odours can cause the leather to absorb them without you noticing.

Avoid carrying food, tobacco or open cosmetics. All of these release particles that end up permeating the lining… and over time, that smell can reach the exterior too.

5. Air it out, but do not expose it

If you feel your bag needs a “refresh”, simply leave it out in the open for a while (but in the shade). Sometimes, just a few minutes are enough for the leather to regain its original scent.

Caring for the scent of a leather bag is another way of respecting the material and the story behind each piece. With small gestures and a little attention, leather retains that distinctive essence that makes it unique and recognisable.

Because a great bag doesn’t just look good: it also feels — and is perceived — just like the first day.
