The earliest references to purses date back to Ancient Greece. Coin wallets emerged as an alternative to pockets. At that time, leather purses had knives attached to the closures to prevent thieves from stealing their owner’s belongings. Religion also contributed to their popularity, as purses were needed to carry the coins used for alms. This led to the creation of reinforced leather purses with gold or silver clasps, depending on the owner’s social status.

The modern leather purse, as we know it today—with a bi-fold design and multiple card slots—became standard in the early 1950s with the introduction of the first credit cards. Some later innovations included the introduction of Velcro purses in the 1970s.
