The earliest references to wallets date back to Ancient Greece. Coin purses emerged as an alternative to pockets. At that time, leather wallets had knives attached to the closures to prevent thieves from stealing their owner’s belongings. Religion also contributed to their popularity, as wallets were needed to carry the coins used for alms. This led to the creation of reinforced leather wallets with gold or silver clasps, depending on the owner’s social status.

The modern leather wallet, as we know it today—with a bi-fold design and multiple card slots—became standard in the early 1950s with the introduction of the first credit cards. Some later innovations included the introduction of Velcro wallets in the 1970s.
